A pell-mell publication, in which we have compiled magazine covers, press clippings and advertisements, to compose a parodic self-fiction around the media figures of the athlete, the artist and the entrepreneur.
The ideology of the self-made man, success, doping, downfall and redemption - all are examined in an original take to question the making of icons and strategies of visibility.
Despite the title's promise to lift the veil on the duo (debunking = reveal), this edition immerses us in a kind of confusion that is highly symptomatic of our times, when information, entertainment and advertising intertwine and parasitize each other.

As a material for their photo collages, the art duo Mazaccio & Drowilal, use popular images of contemporary culture that are intentionally torn from their usual context. With the help of diverse techniques, deliberately bright colors, and irony, the artists transform these images and question the conventional principles of artistic photography.
The book “Paparazzi” is putting together celebrities photographs stolen by paparazzi rearranging in the book form through different collage, working on typography, colours and shapes accompanied by explicit titles “The Beach“, “Bike Riding“, “Surfing“. By juxtaposing heterogeneous and often contradictory shots and blurring the boundaries between natural and artificial, Mazaccio & Drowilal provoke the viewer, who is doomed to balance on the verge of disgust and pleasure when confronted by the authors’ extraordinary artistic experiment.

In 2014, the artists Mazaccio and Drowilal travelled to Silicon Valley in California.
This book reconstructs, through a series of photographs, a colorful and subjective record of their journey. Exploring subjects from counter-culture and its links with technology to New Ageism, it also touches on environmental awareness and the region’s intense culture of sport.
Still lifes punctuate the book, like contemporary vanitas, symbolizing how the great Californian ideals sit alongside the work of its corporations.
This book highlights the image paradigm in a digital era. How do we experience images by scrolling, sliding... and how all kind of representations are reduced to surfaces on screens.

In this very personnal artist book dealing with similarity, Drowilal, confronts photographs of Mazaccio - taken in the intimacy of the couple for about 10 years - with portraits of celebrities from TV shows, red carpets or paintings, all evoking on way or another Mazaccio. The two iconographies are presented top/down - so the book can be 'read' in both ways : one sequence of portraits, and one sequence of look-alikes.

' With caustic humor, French photographers Mazaccio & Drowilal repurpose images from
popular culture into audacious collages [...] the pair draws delicious irony from
the vulgarity and clichés flooding our visually wayward universe, to reveal the subliminal messages we rarely
question'.FH

In the “Paparazzis” series, you’ve paired tabloid cut-outs of
celebrities with idealised backdrops of nature. Can you talk
about the story behind this series?
E: The starting point of this series was a collection of
celebs’ pictures from their everyday activities like shopping
and golfing, but all shot by the paparazzi. We collected
them first from magazines, then from the internet.
R: Gathering the images in the same picture allows for
the sensational side to be neutralised, so there was a shift
from the «scoop» of catching a celeb, to an anonymous
crowd... and it seemed very interesting to us.

'The wit of these images, together with their
unfailing attractiveness and frequent ambiguity, makes it clear
that the Mazaccio & Drowilal stance is not actually a critical
one: rather, they set up a series of games and interconnections
around our virtual era awareness of a total (and in some respects
fascinating) merging of the living with the consumable, the
strange with the familiar, the natural with the artificial, reality
with its images. ' N.H / F.M

'Based on the fact that being an artist seems to be more a condition than a job, we made a report on the Mazaccio's right index (the one she uses to take photos): The Trigger.
It is observed in its everyday life, and all its actions, even the most innocuous such as flushing, are being reified. " R.D

Twins is definitely a Borgesian book. It focuses on the topic of fakeness and simulacre through images of celebrities posing alongside their wax double (in Museums such as Madame Tussaud or Grévin). The layout presents the pictures torn off (like after a breakdown), and pasted on the front and on the back of the same page ; by this way the viewer is never able to look at the original and the copy at the same time.
